What is your athletic background?

I played Rugby League growing up and throughout my teenage years. I was playing as a semi-professional in Queensland and overseas in the UK. When I was 28, injury forced me to retire from Rugby League and led me into the gym. I was already doing gym workouts but my focus shifted. I became focused on training and nutrition.Once I started in the gym world, I became 100% committed. With me, there’s no halfway.

What is a Physique Athlete?

Men’s Physique is bodybuilding for a beach body, athletic look. The aesthetic is to have big shoulders and chest with a V taper and very lean abs. With my sports background, and being six-foot tall with broad shoulders and a small long waist, this athletic look is ideal for me.

How did your nutrition change when you switched sports?

I didn’t understand nutrition when I was playing Rugby League. I was carrying a lot of fat. To change, I had to change my whole lifestyle. My nutrition had to get better. With a balanced diet, I found I could achieve my goals a lot better. And with better nutrition, it not only helped me to feel better physically, but also emotionally and mentally. I felt better in my body, and was no longer bloated or tired. There were so many benefits.

What are your favourite Fitness Meals?

My nutrition program is very consistent and includes proteins, greens for fibre and carbohydrates. I always get the 24 Meals Plan with ½ carbs and ½ vegetables. I love the salmon and sweet potato; it’s my favourite combination. For a treat, I get the wholemeal muffins and protein ice cream. These are the treats I always look forward to.

What keeps you motivated?

When I left Rugby League, I thought that’s it, my competitive days are over. When I no longer had a goal, I lost direction for a bit. I’m a competitive person. Becoming a Physique athlete was reinvigorating, it gave me a new goal and a new focus. When you first start seeing results, you think this is cool, let’s see how far I can go. That’s how I transitioned, the evolution.

What are your goals for this year?

I’ve achieved a lot already; placed in different shows, picked up sponsorships, featured in a leading fitness magazine, and met some high profile fitness people. I thought these things were completely out of my grasp. I never envisioned that I’d be going down this path. I’ll be competing at the Arnold Classic in Melbourne and would like to win if I can. There’s a lot of competition from all over the world, so it will be no easy feat. If I can place in the top five, I’ll be happy.
